Risks include loss of principal and fluctuating value. Investment value will fluctuate, and shares, when redeemed, may be worth more or less than original cost. Small and micro cap securities are subject to greater volatility than those in other asset categories. Value investing is subject to risk that may cause underperformance compared to other equity investment strategies. Fixed income securities are subject to increased loss of principal during periods of rising interest rates. Fixed income investments are subject to various other risks, including changes in credit quality, liquidity, prepayments, call risk, and other factors. Municipal securities are subject to the risks of adverse economic and regulatory changes in their issuing states.
My relationship with Dimensional Fund Advisors: The law gives me the freedom to use or give opinion about any investment that may exist. From individual stocks/bonds to mutual funds to real estate, or diamond mines in South Africa, I am relatively unrestricted when it comes to what I may suggest a client puts in their portfolio. Of the millions of things to invest in, I choose Dimensional.
In the universe of advisors, Dimensional has the right to choose which advisors and financial institutions they allow to buy and sell their funds and they are selective. It’s a high honor to have access to Dimensional products. I’m not aware of any channels you can buy Dimensional Funds through without an advisor or provider at some level. Those of us who have been allowed access are few and far between but the numbers are growing.
Dimensional is selective in this way for a few reasons which are beyond the scope of this disclosure. I choose Dimensional for many reasons most of which are made evident in my communications on this website. Dimensional provides a set of building blocks (mutual funds) that allow me to build portfolios giving me the most confidence that I’m providing the best value and experience for my clients. That’s it. I’m not paid anything by Dimensional. There are no quota’s, sales competitions, sales performance metrics to meet, awards or prizes. I do receive what’s considered ‘soft dollar compensation’. Soft dollar comp. looks like educational conferences where I use my own money to travel to and stay at, presentation slides, graphics, videos, conversations and sometimes language I use to communicate our investment philosophy with and to educate the public. I use Dimensional exclusively when building my portfolios except on client accounts that are held away on other platforms that do not allow access to Dimensional funds. I can’t imagine using anything else in my portfolios.

Fiduciary Duty
Fiduciary duty is a legal obligation that requires financial professionals to act in the best interests of their clients. At my RIA firm, I take this obligation seriously and am committed to upholding the highest standards of ethical conduct in all of my dealings with clients.
As your financial professional, I have a duty to provide you with advice that is in your best interests, rather than advice that benefits me or my firm. I am also required to disclose any conflicts of interest that may influence my recommendations to you.
**This is my disclosure of known potential conflicts: Robert Messner holds a state insurance license to transact life insurance product sales with clients. As a result of a transaction that may occur upon client request, the issuing insurance company will likely pay Robert Messner a commission, often times equal to the first year annual premium required by the policy. It’s also possible that the issuing insurance company may pay a smaller ongoing commission (trail) to Robert Messner for a period of years after policy year 1. All all issuers have their own formulas for determining commissions paid. Clients are counseled on the benefits and drawbacks of life insurance as an often crucial component of a financial, estate or a succession plan. That lucrative commissions could be paid to selling agents is indeed a potential conflict of interest but when disclosed, that transparency provides clients with with useful information with which to make a buying decision.**
In addition, we are required to maintain the confidentiality of your financial information and to protect the assets you entrust to us. We take these responsibilities very seriously and strive to uphold the trust you have placed in us.
If you have any questions about fiduciary duty or how we are meeting our obligations to you, please don’t hesitate to ask. We are committed to transparency and open communication with our clients, and we are always here to help.
REG BI
Regulation Best Interest, or Reg BI, is a new set of rules put in place by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to help protect investors and ensure that financial professionals act in their best interests when providing investment advice.

- Put the interests of our clients first when making recommendations about securities or any other financial product or strategies.
- Disclose any conflicts of interest that may affect our recommendations.
- Exercise reasonable diligence, care, and skill when making recommendations to our clients.
- Provide our clients with a written disclosure outlining the key terms and conditions of any recommendations we make.
If you have any questions about Reg BI or how it applies to our relationship with you, please don’t hesitate to ask. We are committed to providing our clients with clear, transparent, and helpful information about all aspects of our services.
